Korean American Family Services (KFAM)

Korean American Family Services (KFAM) is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing culturally responsive social services to the Korean and Asian American community in Los Angeles. Founded to address the unique challenges faced by immigrants and families undergoing trauma, adaptation, or acculturation stress, KFAM offers a comprehensive range of holistic services including mental health counseling, gender-based violence support, foster care and adoption, child and adult wellness programs, and the Asian Foster Family Initiative. They operate a 24-hour crisis hotline staffed in Korean and English for domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking emergencies.

KFAM has provided wonderful service to Korean American families affected by physical and mental abuse. They treat individuals seeking treatment with the utmost respect and have comfortable counseling rooms that provide a safe space for sharing. Staff members are bilingual in both Korean and English, enabling service to those beyond Korean Americans. As a volunteer here, I was able to hear the stories of individuals harmed by domestic abuse who were able to rise from a painful past. Staff treated me like family and assured me that I was serving a meaningful cause. Domestic abuse in Korean American families is a caused that is too often overlooked, but in the heart of Los Angeles where thousands of Korean immigrants have resided, such abuse poses more of a threat than one may think and KFAM does well to confront the issue. KFAM also supports child wellness through the food care program and foster families through the Asian Foster Family Initiative (AFFI). I highly recommend their services to anyone with a troubled domestic experience.
